The 2nd edition of the Sol Swedish Cup, held in Arlandastad Golf, in the outskirts of Stockholm, has been a resounding success. The tournament organised by the Golf Department of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board drew representatives of the most important Costa del Sol golf courses, the Andalusian Golf Federation, and the main tour operators in Sweden, a key outbound market.
The Spanish Embassy in Sweden and the Spanish Tourist Office (OET) in Stockholm participated in the organisation of the event. The Spanish Ambassador, Enrique Viguera, together with his wife, Marta Altolaguirre, and the Head of above-mentioned OET, Miguel Nombela, hosted a reception for the Spanish golfers who took part in the tournament. The reception was followed by a cocktail party, where everyone promised to maintain the excellent relationships between Spain and Sweden. The Spanish Ambassador himself offered to play in the tournament on the following day as a member of the Costa del Sol team.
The Spanish delegation comprised Francisco Amorós, the Head of the Golf Department at the Costa del Sol Tourist Board; Jaime Bosch, on behalf of the Andalusian Golf Federation; Javier Reviriego, representing Finca Cortesín; Ignacio Iturbe, from Baviera Golf; Víctor Teodosio, from the Málaga Golf Parador; Juan Pablo Arriaga, on behalf of Alcaidesa Golf; Marco Polacci, representing Marco Polacci Promotions; Rafael Cruz-Conde, from Alhaurín Golf and Resort; Ińigo Angulo, Managing Director of El Chaparral Golf Club; Ricardo Andrades, for NH Almenara Golf Hotel & Spa; Javier Llagostera, on behalf of La Quinta Golf & Country Club; Claudia Ory, Sales Manager at La Cala Resort; Laura de Arce, Sales Manager at Golf Hotel Guadalmina – Spa & Golf Resort; and Ignacio Apolinario, representing Santa Clara Golf Club.
The Swedish team included representatives of the main tour operators specialising in golf and contributors to specialist publications: Jan Trollsäs (Travel Point AB); Patric Nilsson (Santido); Elisabeth Viggeborn (REvent Golfresor & Konferenser AB); Andreas Körösi (Sabra Tours AB); Rolf Widström (Turygolf); Meter Sellin (Golf Tours); Per Djerf (PerfektEvent AB); Jerker Sörensson (Los Naranjos Travel Service); and Mats Elsnitz (Golfresan Media AB).
The Swedish and Spanish delegations agreed on the importance of this kind of events, where buyers and suppliers meet and exchange views everyone can profit from.
The tournament ended in a tie. The trophy should have gone to the Costa del Sol team, since they had won the previous edition, but they gave it to the Swedish team, as a token of friendship. The Swedes were delighted with this decision and went out of their way to praise the Spanish golfers.
Both team captains talked at the award-giving ceremony. The closing speech was delivered by Mr Viguera, who highlighted the importance of this kind of tournaments for a better personal and professional understanding in one of the strongest segments to the Costa del Sol travel industry and in one of the strongest markets: in 2007, Sweden had 539,637 golf players and 442 golf courses.
